$5 Summer Pantry Challenge | Week 1: Beans, Beans, Beans!
Welcome to Week 1 of my $5 Summer Pantry Challenge! This week (June 20–26), we’re kicking things off with a humble but mighty pantry staple: dry beans or lentils. With just $5, aim to snag 1–2 bags of dry pinto beans, black beans, or lentils.
Here’s what I got for less than $5 at my local Walmart:
One pound bag of black beans (on sale for $1.50)
Two bags of split peas (priced at $1.42 each)
My total was $4.47 after tax!
Why beans? They're inexpensive, long-lasting, protein-packed, and incredibly versatile—perfect for soups, stews, tacos, salads, and even spreads. Plus, when stored properly, they’ll last for months (even years), making them an ideal foundational food for a well-stocked pantry.
Pantry Tip: Stop by a thrift store or discount shop for a sturdy, sealable container to store your beans. A big mason jar or an old glass canister works great and keeps bugs out.

Let’s build our pantries with wisdom and intention this summer, one week (and one $5 bill) at a time! Happy stewarding!
